Building Stronger Communities

At Teach na nDaoine Family Resource Centre (FRC), we are dedicated to fostering community development and providing essential support services for families. Our mission is to empower individuals and create a nurturing environment where everyone can thrive.

A Community Anchor

Teach na nDaoine FRC has evolved into a cornerstone of the local community, offering a wide range of family, individual, and community supports. It remains committed to addressing local needs, fostering social inclusion, and empowering residents to create a better future for themselves and their families.

Location and Reach

Teach na nDaoine FRC is situated in the Mullaghmatt/Cortolvin local authority housing estate on the western edge of Monaghan town. While the centre primarily supports the residents of Mullaghmatt and Cortolvin estates, its services are open to the wider community.

Humble Beginnings

Teach na nDaoine FRC started as an informal local residents’ association formed by a small group of volunteers. Their initial focus was on organising community activities and addressing environmental issues within the area. In April 1998, the Mullaghmatt/Cortolvin Community House Management Committee was formally established, operating from a two bedroom house at 166 Mullaghmatt.

Securing Funding and Growth

After years of training and development, the committee applied to the Department of Social Community and Family Affairs, securing funding under the Family Resource Centre Programme in 2001. With this funding, the project officially began to expand:

  • 2001: A Coordinator was employed.

  • 2003: A Financial Administrator joined the team.

  • 2006: A Community Development Worker was added to the staff.

Transition to a Multipurpose Facility

As demand for services grew, the small community house could no longer cater to the community's needs. Funding from the Department of Social Welfare, Peace and Reconciliation, and People in Need enabled the construction of a new facility. In January 2005, Teach na nDaoine FRC officially opened its doors as an 8,000-square-foot multipurpose facility.

Expanding Services and Social Enterprise

Over the past 23 years, Teach na nDaoine FRC has significantly expanded its range of supports and services, with a focus on families and individuals experiencing disadvantage. In the last decade, the centre has also ventured into social enterprise, including:

  • Local Grocery Shop: A not for profit shop.

  • The HUB Furniture, Upcycling & Training: Offering low-cost furniture to families on the margins of society.
