What we do

The HUB Furniture, Upcycling & Training provides affordable furniture options to the local community. This is achieved through receiving donations of reusable furniture from the public, upcycling if necessary, and then offering this furniture at low prices to the local community. By extending the lifespan of furniture and reducing waste, The HUB Furniture, Upcycling & Training actively contributes to climate action and sustainability efforts. Additionally, The HUB Furniture, Upcycling & Training offers training opportunities to marginalised communities and supports those most distant from the labour market by providing employment opportunities.

Background and funding

The concept for this social enterprise came about in 2021 through consultation with members of the local community and key stakeholders.  The lack of such a service was very evident and the Board Of Management and coordinator of Teach na nDaoine FRC sought funding to establish this social enterprise.  We were lucky to receive funding from POBAL through the Community Services Programme (CSP) fund in 2022.  A manager and general operative were in place in early 2023, with phase one of the project opening its doors in April 2023.

Our mission

Our mission is to provide affordable and sustainable furniture solutions to communities while promoting environmental consciousness and social impact.  We believe in giving new life to second-hand furniture through upcycling, reducing waste, and providing access to quality low-cost furniture to the public.  Our model is rooted in the principles of social enterprise, with a focus on creating positive change and empowering individuals and families through employment, education, and access to affordable home furnishings.  We strive to be a leader in the circular economy, using our platform to inspire others to adopt more environmentally conscious consumption habits and support the local community.

Our aim

The HUB Furniture, Upcycling & Training aims to make a positive impact on both the community and the environment by providing affordable furniture options, reducing waste, promoting upcycling, and supporting climate action through sustainable practices.

Our objectives

  1. To source and collect used furniture from the community and give it a new lease of life through upcycling, if needed.

  2. To provide low-cost furniture options to the community, reducing their burden and encouraging a circular economy.

  3. To educate the public on the importance of upcycling and reducing waste, by showcasing our reusing and upcycling processes and practices.

  4. To create employment and training opportunities for disadvantaged groups.

  5. To partner with local organisations and businesses to promote sustainability and encourage a waste-free community.
